For a long time, I believed I had a tapeworm living inside me. No matter how much I ate, I just could not put on any weight. And I ate A LOT. My wife will attest to this fact. I soon realised that it was probably just my metabolism, but I discovered recently that there is an actual tapeworm diet. People take a tablet containing a worm larva and then let it settle in to their digestive tract and consume half of their calories before it eventually makes its out.
Luckily, this diet is not legal in pretty much every country except Mexico, but it got me wondering what other ridiculous diets there are out there. Here are a few of my favourites.
The Sleeping Beauty
The theory behind this is that you can’t eat if you’re not conscious, so naturally, you sedate yourself for a few days and starve.
Apparently Elvis Presley was a believer in this diet. You know, before he died.
The Tongue Patch
If you enjoy your food too much, why not pay £1500 to have some quack sew a small square of mesh onto your tongue? It doesn’t contain any chemicals like a nicotine patch, but merely sits on the tongue and makes it difficult, or even painful, to actually eat any solid food. Or talk.
Getting your ears pierced, specifically the inner cartilage, supposedly acts as an appetite suppressant. It’s believed to be similar to acupuncture but it only lasts for 6 weeks before it becomes ineffective. Then get your tongue pierced and you can’t eat for 4 days.
Australian “breatharian” Jasmuheen believes (and has made a living from selling) the idea that people can survive on the energy of sunlight and 300 calories a day, which she says she has done for 14 years. The Australian 60 Minutes show challenged her to demonstrate, but after just 48 hours the on hand medic observed signs of high blood pressure, stress and dehydration. She claimed these were caused by “city pollution”.
I’m thinking of setting up a breatharian restaurant, the costs would be low.
There are so many crazy diets out there, do you have any favourites?
