My whole body is shaking. I have just done my workout for the day and it was a tough one. I only did one single exercise, but I got a total strength and cardio workout from it. I’m talking about the burpee. It’s also known as a squat thrust and involves starting in the pushup position, then jumping your feet in towards your hands, standing up and jumping, then reversing the movement. and rinse and repeat. And that’s what I did. 200 times. As fast as possible.
It’s a high intensity exercise, so not best suited to people with joint problems, but for everyone else, you can’t go far wrong with these. You get your heart and lungs working hard, your legs and arms start to burn and once you’ve done 20 or so, you know you’re working! it also gets shoulders, back and core involved so it really is total body!
Named after the man that invented it, American physiologist Royal H. Burpee in the 1930’s and adopted by the US army as a way of assessing fitness levels in recruits, it is also popular with prison inmates due to the lack of equipment or space needed to perform it. I get anyone that is capable to do these at some point during their workouts with me!
There are various ways of changing the burpee, usually to make it tougher! Why not do a super burpee (finish with a box jump), a core burpee (one leg) or a burpee pull up (jump up to a bar and do a pull up!). All of these will provide a new challenge when regular burpees get too easy (I personally don’t think they do!)
If you don’t fancy doing your regular workout or can’t get to the gym for some reason, you could do worse than a few sets of burpees! Give them a go!
